Hard Times is Dickens's tenth novel and was published weekly in Household Words in 1854. It is the first time a a novel by Dickens had not been illustrated at the time of its original publication. The first time Hard Times was illustrated was by Frederick Walker in 1862 as part of the 'Library Edition'. The illustrations below, which reproduce Walker's illustrations, are taken from the 'Biographical Edition' (1902-3) of Dickens's works.
